Sarah McLean – 9 Rules to Break When Romancing A Rake

Sarah has created a wickedly delicious read and a permanent addition to any historical romance fans book shelf.

This is a first for me and author Sarah MacLean. Apparently she has a book titled ‘The Season’ that was released in 2009 but I have yet to locate a copy. So I am going to treat this book like a début, which it is, for all intents and purposes… And what a début it is! I totally loved this book, loved her writing style, and the plot premise. The book moves well with a good story line that keeps her readers interested. The title might seem a bit frivolous but there is nothing silly or casual about this love story.

A lady does not smoke cheroot. She does not ride astride. She does not fence or attend duels. She does not fire a pistol, and she never gambles at a gentlemen’s club.

Lady Calpurnia Hartwell has always followed the rules, rules that have left her unmarried – and more than a little unsatisfied. And so she’s vowed to break the rules and live the life of pleasure she’s been missing.

But to dance every dance, to steal a midnight kiss – to do those things, Callie will need a willing partner. Someone who knows everything about rule-breaking. Someone like Gabriel St. John, the Marquess of Ralston – charming and devastatingly handsome, his wicked reputation matched only by his sinful smile.

If she’s not careful, she’ll break the most important rule of all – the one that says that pleasure-seekers should never fall hopelessly, desperately in love . . .

I like it when an author shows us that love it not easy, that love weaves its way into people and changes their expectations of themselves and others. This was a truly touching historical romance story – the genre at its best. The characters are what did it for me with this story. I usually describe the female leads in terms of the strength of their character and personality. Cali, is indeed strong but not at first and not in the usual way. This girl has some big self-esteem issues and is not the beautiful goddess type we so often see; I like that she is a bit of a plain woman. But she is brave and far more desirable than she gives herself credit for. She has an adventurers soul and it take a disreputable rake to help her live the life that she has always dreamed of. Enter Gabriel…

Arrogant and self-possessed, with a somewhat icy cold demeanor, he has a scandalous reputation. This boy is the last man on earth who any sane girl would set her sights on. But despite his rather rakish attitude, his compassion and understanding of the fragility of our heroine totally endears him to the reader. He does a few silly “man” things, but I loved the fact that he was flawed and delectably so.

The love scenes were absolutely searing. I would give it an 8.5 out of 10 on my Sexy Scale. (10 being very graphic in sexy content – 1 being so tame there isn’t even a real kiss… ok, well maybe a chaste one)

A wickedly delicious read and a permanent addition to my bookshelf. Can’t wait for the next one. I give this book a 9.5 out of 10 overall.
